The 2016 Budget implementation has suffered another setback
as President Muhammadu Buhari has refused to sign the budget into law days
after the Senate passed the budget and sending same to the president for him to
sign into law.
The president refused to append his signature because
according to him the budget sent to him was mere highlights of the budget
passed and not the entire documents he sent to them. The Budget 2016 since its
presentation by the President in December has witnessed a lot of hiccups
starting from when the budget was declared missing by the senate in January
2016 which eventually was reported to have been found. After that comes the
alleged padding of the budget during ministries defense of their budget. Some ministries out rightly denied the budget
prepared for them that it wasn’t what they presented like the Ministry of
Health and Information and culture.
According to reports from the presidency, the national assembly
either did not not complete work on the budget or are playing politics with the
budget they claimed they passed a development sources said the President isn’t comfortable
with. Only the highlights of the budget were sent to the president to sign without
a clear detail of the budget. The president does not know the adjustment made
on the proposal sent to them and the documents the legislature has removed or
added to the budget, the source added.
Meanwhile President Muhammadu Buhari has jetted out of the country
to attend the nuclear security conference taking place in Washington DC United
states. He is not expected back in the country until Friday 1st
April 2016.
