The Madness Called Traffic In Lagos

The recent terrible traffic situations in Lagos is something that has to be seriously looked into. The gargantuan gridlock being experienced daily is fast making Lagosians wondering what is responsible for this latest mad traffic on our roads.

The traffic which is similar to what Lagosians experienced last year when  Mr Akinwunmi Ambode was sworn in as Governor of Lagos State  turned people to trekkers on the streets and highway as people are stucked in traffic for several hours on a daily basis. Then the Governor who swung into action after various criticism and attack on his government as being unable to match the legacies of previous administration of Mr Babatunde Fashola
style of making Lagos free of traffic immediately restructure the management of Lagos State traffic Management Authority LASTMA and made certain changes in the traffic administration of the state lo and behold things changed
The present situation is similar to that experience. Lagosians are locked down in traffic from morning till late in the evening. A lady Banker who complained bitterly said the traffic situation has earned her several queries and bashing from her boss at work noting that she usually wake up 5 am each morning to drive to V.I and gets to work by 7.30 but now despite her waking up at 4 am nowadays to be able to beat the traffic on three to four occasions she got to work around 10 am due to the heavy traffic she contends with every morning.
Another Lagos resident who said he lives around Isheri North on the Ogun state axis of the Lagos Ibadan express way said the traffic on that route is nothing to be joked with. The traffic is just unexplainable both lanes of the expressway is usually and always blocked. Commuters on that road especially Mowe and Ibafo now charge between N400-N500 as against the regular N100 being charged before the fuel scarcity and the new traffic gridlock being experienced.
Lagos is one of the fastest growing cities in the world with a population of over 25 million inhabitants but left to battle with growing traffic on the limited roads available. There hasn't been any new Road constructed in the areas where traffic is more worrying especially the Lagos Ibadan express way Road as estates and residential areas are springing up every day. Aside constructing new roads flyovers and connecting links are to be constructed to ease the pain of the people along that road. Also The LASTMA officials need to do more in the area of traffic controls and management. They seem to have gone to sleep recently. The heavy traffic being witnessed presently has a lot to do with bad administration of the outfit.
