INEC Suspends Rivers Rerun Election, Declares It "inconclusive"

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced that all elections in all constituencies of Rivers state rerun elections held on Saturday 19 March 2016 has been suspended.

The suspension according to report will continue pending the receipt of a comprehensive report from the electoral commission’s field officers and monitors who were present in the state.
The Electoral commission having cancelled election in eight local government councils of the state explained the recent development saying; “the suspension does not affect constituencies where the exercise has been completed and the results declared by the returning officers”.
INEC’s Director in charge of Voter Education and Publicity, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, disclosed to Newsmen saying “It is rather unfortunate, some of these elections witnessed the disruption of the process, including the barricading of some of the commission's  Local Government offices and Registration Centres used for the distribution of election materials which led to the late commencement of the exercise in some places around the state.
Furthermore,Osaze-Uzzi said of more greater concern was the level of threats, violence and intimidation of election officials and voters by armed thugs and touts working for some politicians, which disrupted the elections in some areas. There were reports of so many attacks in various locations resulting in injuries, kidnappings, ballot snatching, diversion of electoral officers and materials, and so on which led to the suspension in eight Local Government Areas.
The INEC's director said having taken into consideration the situation, the Commission is compelled to suspend all further action concerning the exercise in all the other constituencies in the State pending the comprehensive report from the Commission's field officers and Monitors.“For the avoidance of doubt, it should be noted that the suspension does not affect the constituencies and Wards  where the exercise has been completed and the results declared by the INEC's Returning Officers”. He added.
