Mikel Obi Named Super Eagles Captain

Nigeria Midfielder and Chelsea Fc star John Mikel Obi has been named the new captain of the Super Eagles.
Speaking at a pre match conference today former Captain appointed by former coach Sunday Oliseh who resigned last month, Ahmed Musa announced that it’s not right for him to be the captain when a senior player like Mikel is in the national team with him. In Mikel’s acceptance speech, he appreciated Ahmed Musa for being a model professional and also promised to lead the super Eagles to a win against the Pharaohs of Egypt tomorrow. Mikel Obi said defeating Egypt on Friday is the major priority for the Super Eagles as this will boost the team’s chances of qualifying for next year’s African Nations Cup (AFCON) in Gabon.

Nigeria seats two points behind the Egyptians in the qualifying group, but a win in Kaduna will see the three-time African champions top the group before next week’s reverse fixture in Alexandria, Egypt. “The Egyptians are ahead of us in the qualifiers, we therefore have to win on Friday so as to go above them on the table, So, Friday’s match is really the big one and we are playing at home in front of our fans. We are ready.” the new captain said.

Michael John Nchekwube Obinna popularly called John Mikel Obi Born 22nd April 1987 in Jos Plateau state started his football career at the age of 12 when he was scouted by Pepsi academy and later moved to Plateau United as a professional footballer. He moved to Lyn Oslo shortly after the world youth champions. He was announced to have signed for Manchester United in 2005 before reports had it he headed to Chelsea with his manager Shittu to complete his signing for Chelsea in London. Mikel has grown over the years to be an integral part of Chelsea football club and Nigeria super eagles. He has won the UEFA Champions league, UEFA Europa Cup,English Premier league twice Club world Cup, 4 FA Cups 2 League Cups Community shield. He also won the Nations Cup with the Super Eagles of Nigeria in 2013.
