State governors in Nigeria have expressed full support for
the Federal government’s decision to increase the pump price of petrol from
N86.50 to N145 despite several opposition and attack from people and activists
to the new development.
The Ogun state governor Ibikunle Amosun disclosed this to pressmen at the end
of a meeting of the Nigeria Governors Forum NGF held at the presidential Villa
Abuja on Thursday 19th May 2016. According to Amosun who answered
questions from reporters after the meeting which ended a the early hours of
Thursday said We supported the increase in fuel pump price because we believe
that it is in the interest of the masses. He added that the Federal government acted well for all Nigerians saying
it is one if the sacrifices Nigerians have to make to benefit all.
The governor said the general belief was that only the rich
benefit from the fuel subsidy at the detriment of the masses. He said the money
meant to subsidize petrol would now be used to develop infrastructure adding
that the masses would be the one to benefit from it in the long run. Amosun said he believe that such money saved
from payment of subsidy for a few rich men will be used for infrastructure and
social services for the downtrodden masses.
Despite claim by the Vice president Professor Yemi Osinbajo
that what led to the increment of petrol price was as a result of high rate of
foreign exchange which had it made is impossible for oil markters to import
refined petrol into the country because the Central Bank Of Nigeria simply do
not have enough foreign exchange to give out to independent oil marketers to
import and since they source for their fx in autonomous market at a higher rate
made old price unattainable and impossible for them to sell.
The inability of Nigerians to really ascertain the cause and
reason for the petrol price whether as a result of subsidy removal or as a
result of foreign exchange rate is what people are not particularly sure of
bearing in mind the Nigeria Labour Congress resolve to embark on Nationwide
strike which according to many has been ineffective so far as the other faction
of NLC led by Joe Ajaero backed out of the protest and strike organized by the
labour Union.
