The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress has in a statement signed by the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC Comrade Ayuba wabba said the organized labour and its allies will embark on nationwide strike and shut down Banks and other businesses if by mid night 17th May 2016 the federal government fails to reverse to the old pump price of petrol of N86.50 and in addition to reversal of electricity tariff which was recently hiked by 45%.
In the statement released at the end of the the joint negotiation council of the labour force unanimously took the decision to shut down the country should the federal government decide not to revert back to the old price of petrol at N145.
The labour Union noted that the Buhari led administration backtrack on its campaign promises especially on the removal of fuel subsidy. According to Comrade Wabba, the minister of state for petroleum Ibe Kachikwu continously and consistently assured Nigerians that the federal government would ensure the fuel subsidy will be maintained and the NNPC will also strive to make petrol available as at when due maintaining the price the federal government announced recently.
The labour in the communique issued after the joint emergency meeting which ran till late night on saturday, advised the federal government to revert to the old price regime in order to reduce the sufferingof the people and to consider this singular act of mindless pump price increase at this point in time. Amongst others the labour union ask the federal government to reverse thw 45% electricity tarrif increase, reconstitute the boards of PPPRA and NNPC in other to bring sanity to the downstream petroleum sector, Intensify the prosecution of thise involved in subsidy scam with a view to recover looted funds.
The Emergency meeting which lasted till the late hours of Saturday 14th stated that in the event government fails to accede to these demands on or before 12 midnight on Tuesday, May17, 2016, the Nigeria Labour Congress, The Trade Union Congress and their civil society allies resolve to commence the following actions with effect from Wednesday, May 18, 2016
Mobilize street protests, Shut down Banks, Sea and Airports Government and private offices as well as Markets. Commence indefinite nationwide strike action.
Based on this Nigerians are therefore according to organised labour advised to stock sufficient food items that will lasr for a while for the prosecutio. Of the curreng struggle against the Nigerian masses.
