Governor Nyesom Wike
of River state and chairman of the party’s National Convention committee put the
question for the motion out to the delegates and it was affirmed by the
delegates from all the 36 states of the federation.
Present at the Port Harcourt Convention venue were all the
12 PDP governors including Chairman of
PDP governors forum Dr. Olusegun Mimiko who were formally in support of Ali Modu Sheriff, Senator David Mark, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Secondus Uche PDP Deputy National Chairman and other top
party officials except the current acting Chairman Senator Ali Modu Sheriff who
was reported to have earlier suspended the convention in a press relesea citing
the court case pending over the suspension of the convention. It was however
not clear if the decision supersedes the decision expected to emanate from a
parallel convention taking place in Abuja of some aggrieved party members.
Appointed alongside Senator Makarfi Ahmed to steer the
affairs of the party for the next 90 days when another convention is expected
to take place are: Senator Ben Obi as the secretary other members are Senator
Odion Ugbesie, Senator Abdul Ningi, Mr Kabir Usman, Mr Dayo Adeyeye and Alhaja
Aisha Aliyu. It was however declared at the convention that the new committee set
up are not eligible to contest into any elective post during the next
convention for the party to have an hitch free and fair election of officers to
the various positions of the National Executives.
In his speech, Senator Makarfi Ahmed said he accepted to
serve because it was about the unity of the party and progress of the country. In
his words Sen. Makarfi said, I humbly accept this challenge and I do so on
behalf of other members of the committee who were nominated on trust. I assure
you, you will have no cause to worry. None of us is seeking for any office we
are here to serveand bring unity to our party. I call on all aggrieved party
men and women to give us a chance to rebuild our party to give hope to Nigeria,
he added.
